Waiting on nbn? Here’s how a 5G interim solution keeps your site connected

At One Wire, we’re more than just contractors , we’re partners in building connected communities. By working directly with developers and carriers, we help limit delays and reduce project risk. Through programs like the nbn Pre-Installation Program, we ensure every home is prepared early, so connectivity becomes a feature, not a fix.

Sometimes a new development or home build reaches completion before the fixed-line connection does.
Carriers like nbn or private fibre operators work to tight deployment schedules, but delays can happen. These might include client milestones not being met (for example, incomplete pit & pipe works), carrier resourcing constraints, or internal project hold-ups.

In these cases, a 5G interim solution acts as a reliable bridge. It keeps builders, sales offices, and homeowners connected while the permanent nbn FTTP service is still in progress.

Don’t let network delays hold up handovers, stay connected with a 5G interim solution.

1️⃣ End User (Single Dwelling)
If the home is already occupied or about to hand over, a simple 5G modem can deliver fast broadband immediately. It’s perfect for streaming, remote work, or basic smart-home functions.

2️⃣ Whole-Site Coverage (Builders / Developers)
For larger construction sites, display villages, or developments with remote access needs… think CCTV cameras, IoT sensors, or multiple devices sharing data, coverage and capacity matter more. These setups often use higher-grade 5G routers with external antennas to maintain a stable link.

Before selecting a plan, always check the coverage maps from Australia’s major networks:

Telstra Coverage, Optus Coverage, and TPG/Vodafone Coverage — to confirm signal strength at your site.

Choosing the right plan

Today’s 5G plans are fast, flexible, and affordable. Most are month-to-month, meaning you can scale up or cancel when the fixed service is ready.

Here’s a quick overview of what’s available (without diving into brand names):

  • Entry-Level Plans: around $60–$70 per month, ~100 Mbps speeds

  • Mid-Range Plans: around $75–$90 per month, 150–250 Mbps speeds

  • High-Performance Plans: $90–$120 per month, 200–500 Mbps speeds

All offer generous (often unlimited) data, though heavy users such as builders streaming camera feeds or sharing large files, should confirm if a fair-use policy applies.

What equipment do I need?

For residential or single-user needs, a plug-and-play 5G modem with built-in Wi-Fi 6 is typically supplied with the plan. Expect to spend around $300 – $500 if you’re purchasing one outright.

For commercial or builder applications, consider enterprise-grade 5G routers with LAN ports, external antenna support, and the ability to handle multiple connected devices. These units range from $900 to $1,400, depending on brand and features.

How to install it

Installation is simple, but placement matters.

  • Position the modem near a window or external wall facing the nearest 5G tower.

  • Avoid metal sheds or enclosed areas that block signal.

  • External antennas can dramatically boost performance for semi-rural or regional sites.
Once nbn FTTP becomes available, the 5G equipment can easily be repurposed as a backup or failover service, ensuring your site always stays connected.

Wireless or Fibre - Why Not Both?

Use a 5G wireless connection to bridge the gap while waiting for your nbn™ fibre service. Stay connected, secure, and productive during every stage of construction — then switch seamlessly to a fixed-line connection for long-term reliability.

“Wireless keeps you connected today — but fibre builds the foundation for tomorrow.”
