Connected From Day One: Helping New Homeowners Get Online, Hassle-Free

If you are building or subdividing in Victoria, getting nbn infrastructure right is just as important as power and water. The process can feel overwhelming but it is straightforward once you know the steps, timing, and responsibilities. Below is a practical guide on when to apply, how to apply, what to expect, and how One Wire can manage it end to end for you.

At One Wire, we’ve always believed that internet should be a feature, not a fix. For years, we’ve worked alongside builders and developers to make sure homes across Victoria and throughout Australia are connected the right way from the very start.

This blog was created to help close the gap between builders, developers and new homeowners, ensuring that everyone understands what’s been done behind the scenes to make the move-in experience smoother. Many of our builders have already embraced the One Wire process, and we encourage all builders to extend this support offering to their clients so that every new homeowner remains in good hands and experiences the full benefits of a professionally managed connection journey.

To further support this, we’ve developed a range of homeowner collateral, including guides, FAQs and quick-reference documents that explain the pre-install process, how to connect to your chosen Retail Service Provider (RSP/ISP), and what to expect at each stage. These resources simplify what can otherwise be a confusing step, giving homeowners clear, trustworthy information direct from the source.

The average Aussie home has over 25 connected devices!

If your builder has arranged for an NBN Pre-installation, your property has already been set up for success. All on-property cabling and infrastructure installation has been completed, including a lead-in conduit (LIC) from the street pit to the home that meets all current compliance standards.

This ensures your property is fully prepared for activation, allowing your chosen internet provider (RSP/ISP) to switch on your service remotely and quickly, without the need for additional civil or internal works.

We also maintain channel partnerships with several retail providers, allowing for a seamless activation process once your service request is made.

And if you’re enjoying how smooth this process has been, maybe give your builder a quick thank you for lining up the pre-install. They’ve saved you from a world of post-handover headaches (and probably a few phone calls to NBN).

When to Request Your Internet Service

To make sure you’re connected from the day you move in, we recommend placing your internet order 1 to 2 weeks prior to handover.

If your home is a KDRB (Knock Down Rebuild) or a redevelopment, we suggest starting this conversation a little earlier, ideally 4 to 6 weeks before occupancy, to confirm any existing lead-in conduits or previous service pathways.

Getting in early ensures your activation happens without delay and that any network-related checks can be completed before you take possession.

For more guidance, you can contact our team to request our Homeowner Information Pack. It walks you through the connection process, provides sample timelines, and includes contact details for support if you need a hand.

Why It Matters

A pre-installed home means no last-minute trenching, digging or waiting weeks for network appointments. Builders who work with One Wire give their clients a smoother, faster and more professional experience, helping homeowners connect with confidence and move into a home that’s already digitally ready.

And for homeowners, having clear instructions and access to One Wire’s support resources means no guesswork, no confusion and no downtime.
